Providing aged care services is a highly rewarding and satisfying career path or voluntarily position. Whether caring for a loved one or a program participant, this a position that provides valuable life experience whilst supporting someone in an engaging and positive way!
But starting out in this field can be challenging, and so it is important to know that there is advice and support whenever you need it. From communication to knowing what support services are available, there are myriad resources available at your disposal to help surpass some of the position’s early challenges.

- Be open to communication

This is because no two participants are the same, and each has their own specific requirements for their program, whether that be cooking assistance, help with the shopping – whatever!
Therefore, one of the most important things to do early on is establish yourself as someone who is going to sit and chat with your participant but also be ready to listen to them and their requirements.
- Multi-tasking is essential
There will be days when you will have to take on multiple tasks at once – this is all just part of providing top class support services! For example, there may be times when you have to help your participant clean the home whilst keeping an eye on the clock as they have a doctor’s appointment in an hour.
Or, you might be helping them cook whilst arranging their weekly medication schedule. Either way, it’s important to remember that no two days are the same, and that each day will present different challenges where you may have to be on top of two or more things at the one time.
And, after all, a challenge is always a good thing – it’s all part of what makes this position so rewarding!
- The work can be physical
There is a degree of physicality involved in providing elderly support services. After all, you may be required to be on your feet for a few hours a day, helping out with cooking, getting the groceries, assisting your participant with getting to appointments etc.
Therefore, it doesn’t hurt to have at least a small degree of physical fitness, as this will ensure that you can handle some of the more physical tasks like helping a participant with mobility issues.
- Be caring & patient
Any role where you are supporting someone who needs your assisting can be challenging, and at at times you may even find yourself a little frustrated without a particular day is going – this is normal! However, it’s important to take a breath, relax and realise that you’re providing a worthwhile service and truly making a difference in someone’s life.
Not every shift is going to go your way, but you can use that adversity to learn more about the role and take it on in the future.
- Stay positive
It’s important to stay positive in order to provide a healthy, supportive atmosphere. Some days, when things just don’t seem to be working out, it may seem difficult to do this, but once again it’s important to remember why you started aged care service in the first place – to help out someone who may really need your support!
